Since 2021, GROWTH has identified redeveloping the former Aledo Junior High School into 30-units of vibrant workforce housing. Since that time, GROWTH has continuously worked to make that effort a reality.
Recently, GROWTH request funding from the Illinois Housing Development Authority to make the $15.5 million redevelopment possible, and learned on Friday, June 16th that the project was not recommended for funding in the 2023 allocation round.
While the news is disappointing, GROWTH will persevere through this adversity and plans to continue its important work to redevelop this historic community asset into new rental housing opportunities for those that wish to live and work in Aledo.
Northside Lofts complements our ongoing efforts to remake historic downtowns into a thriving destination for new business and resident growth. The intent of the development is to create vibrant workforce housing for those holding the jobs our efforts are creating downtown and throughout Aledo. GROWTH remains committed to this intent and will continue working to redevelop this historic property into quality housing. This will increase the residential base of downtown and also creates a new tax base for the City of Aledo while promoting all the great amenities that downtown has to offer.
